We are a family of five planning a major road trip in 2015
to mark my 40th birthday. We are originally from South Africa but
have been living in the US since 1998. We moved to the USA when my husband, a
techy, emigrated with his wife, me (Doris) and our daughter, Kutala, a recent
graduate of UNC-CH! We have a 15 year old son who is a high school freshman. We
also have an adult son (Vincent), who currently resides in South Africa and is
in college over there. We also have a 10 year old dog, Max! I’ve since become a
techy myself! We are a family that loves to travel!
This year I’m turning 40 years old WHOHOO! I’ve never
celebrated my birthday, so I wondered what would be the best way to mark my 40th
birthday and can finally have what I call a birthday party! I thought a road
trip will be the best gift for myself and to my family. Our best times in life,
as a family, have been when we were all in a car traveling, whether in South
Africa or here in the USA, road trips are the glue that hold us together. I am
all about family, so, to me, family + travel = fun!
For our family to be complete, I would love to bring our son
over from South Africa to join us for the summer and we can all jump into a
beautiful SUV like a Range Rover or Cadillac Escalade (mhmmm dream on), hitch a trailer, load
all our stuff, including camping gear, kayaking gear, and just be on the road! My
husband and I are techies, so we need all the bells and whistles for us to
remain digitally connected to the world (Isn't dreaming wonderful)!
I’ve been dreaming about a trip across the USA for as long I’ve
been in the USA! I want to cover every inch of this great nation but time is
always our enemy when one has a great purpose to fulfill, like spending time
with family! I can only afford two weeks of vacation at a time, so I want to
split it into two trips, one in summer of 2015 and another in summer of 2016!
Apart from me celebrating my 40th birthday, my
son is also preparing to go to college, so I thought, it would be awesome to
include colleges in our tour! The great north east has some world renowned
colleges, so we will focus on them. Our goal is to start in New York, Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Pennsylvania! My hope
is to include a lot of fun, like swimming, kayaking and canoeing in New
England.
My family is already
excited about it, now the planning begins. In the next few weeks, I will lay
down the plan for the tour! I want to record and video-tape all of it and blog
about it as we go! I cannot wait! See you in New England in 2015 and in the Great Wild West in 2016! Wish us luck!
